WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING USELESS AND BEING CRUEL?

Day one of the cinema studies conference. As would be expected, there are lots of very interesting things being said, but after sitting through about eight hours worth of interesting (and generally fairly complicated) things, I feel really exhausted. It has been a long day of careful listening, careful attention to my posture, and lessons learned about melodrama, horror, Orson Welles, etc. We lived, we learned, and tomorrow we've got to do it all over again, actually managing between two rooms of simultaneously running panels. I hope our budget was capable of purchasing an adequate amount of food. Tonight I got a very wicked looking corkscrew for the wine or also for defending my life in dark alleys. It looks like a seriously tough instrument. Outside in a triangular cloud of cigarette smoke we theorized writing a paper on the use of kitchen appliances as murder weapons in the cinema. The ugly side of domesticity.
