On Friday, after Connie and I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, which was about as real and as fake and as charming as anyone could ever hope their cinematic or even their life experience to be, we ate at a Mexican restaurant. By the time we were done it was dark outside, and cold and rainy. To warm up, she proposed running down the street, which was crowded by shoppers and long lines of Christmas trees for sale. (As they don’t have the space for tree lots here, they seem to just line them up along the already overly crowded sidewalks—amazing). So there we were, tearing it up down Amsterdam Avenue, my vision becoming increasingly obscured by the raindrops fogging up my glasses. By the time we were warmed up, I was virtually completely blind, panting frosty little clouds out, and laughing hysterically, like I never had to face a normal social situation again.
